Will Sarkozy have a wedding to remember? 363 views

The world is anxiously waiting for the next piece of news on the potential wedding of French president Nicholas Sarkozy and his partner Carla Bruni. So far all there has been is a hint from Sarkozy that he plans to wed the former model, with little news of when it will be held.

The French press have been scrambling to find the answers, as this becomes a real life soap opera, with the world as the audience. The tabloids are desperate to know whether it will be a small ceremony with a few close friends and relatives or whether the wedding will be a huge event, fit for a king.

Sarkozy, 52, and Bruni, 40, have been incredibly discreet about any plans, with no details of a potential wedding date. The only clues have come from a few comments made by Sarkozy and their highly publicised courtship in locations from Disneyland Paris to the ruins of Petra, Jordan. Are these possible venues for the ceremony or even the honeymoon?

Many spectators have predicted that the wedding will be a glitzy affair, with international delegates and royalty in attendance. Sarkozy, nicknamed the “bling-bling president” by sections of Frances media, reportedly bought Bruni a huge diamond Dior engagement ring in the shape of a heart, while she alledgedly offered him a Pakek Philippe watch.

The normal procedure for French couples is to tie the knot at the local mayor's office, with an official marriage notice published ten days previously. Celebrities are not required to publish the notice in advance, and it's possible that Sarkozy, as president, could get the celebrity treatment to ensure his privacy.

There are factors that may encourage Sarkozy to show restraint with any lavish plans. This will be his third marriage, and he has only been divorced from his second wife, Cecilia, for less than three months. It is likely that Sarkozy will want to shed his appearance as a ladies’ man and by having a more discreet ceremony which could help quash these suggestions.

This will be the first wedding for Bruni, an Italian-born heiress to a tire company who had a major modelling career. Bruni, who is now a singer, is very much a celebrity in her own right and has dated artists such as Mick Jagger, Eric Clapton and tycoon Donald Trump. Commentators believe she will likely be more in favour of something a bit more glam for her wedding.

With Bruni marrying for the first time, "I think she might need a white dress," said Colombe Pringle, editor of Point de Vue magazine, who said she has called Bruni to congratulate her.

Sarkozy, who has two weddings behind him, can wear an old suit, Pringle joked.
