Brilliant Bridesmaids
Our resident bride-to-be, Cheryl, shares the highs and lows of wedding planning in the run-up to her big day. This week she sings the praises of bridesmaids everywhere...
Bridesmaids are just great, aren’t they? As brides I think we’re actually rather lucky to have them on our team. Who else apart from brides-to-be gets the opportunity to have someone by their side, listening to them moan, giving them advice, and generally making them feel good about themselves? I now know how Batman must have felt with that chirpy reliable Robin at his side.
My bridesmaids have been brilliant – accompanying me to all the dress fittings (and oohing and aahing in the correct dress-trying-on places), arranging my hen do, which mustn’t have been easy to get 15 busy girls from across the south and west of England to agree to turn up on the same day, and generally being there to help with all the little tasks that go towards making a wedding.
But did you know that the reason for having lovely glittery girls by your side actually dates back to pagan times when women (who presumably weren’t busy rolling big stones up a hill in Wiltshire) were recruited to dress in a similar fashion to the bride to trick evil spirits who might be tempted to kidnap her and whisk her off in a nasty gobliny way. Hmm. That’s quite a selfless task when you think about it. Back then, if I thought there was even a remote chance I might have been pinched by a bad spirit and forced to live in an underworld surrounded by hell fires and people with horns sticking out of their heads, I might have turned down the bridesmaid job, thank you very much.
So I just want to thank the two girls who will be following me down the aisle, plumping my dress up prettily during the day, handing out tissues to weepy rellies and making sure I haven’t got lipstick on my teeth or my skirt tucked into my pants – all the while keeping an eye out for suspicious-looking horned creatures in black cloaks carrying garden forks. A girl can’t be too careful…
Next week: Cheryl cracks open the aspirin as she recovers from her hen do…
