Our 200th Anniversary! 2501 views

This is a special edition of the WeddingPath newsletter, as today is our 200th Anniversary!!! WeddingPath as we know it was founded online by Sujay just over two years ago but, as I’d like to explain, the original concept is a lot older than that.

200years

The forerunner to WeddingPath was in fact invented by Sujay’s great-great-great grandfather Balakrishnan Sundaramurthy Menon on this day in 1807.

Balakrishnan Sundaramurthy Menon (known as Bob to his friends) was arranging the nuptials of his daughter, Meenakshi-Kavindra, to her suitor. In India, tradition dictates that the bride's family pays for the wedding and Bob was under pressure to deliver a fantastic wedding on a budget. Sound like a familiar problem? In those pre-eBay times, deals were tough to find, but Bob found a novel, cost-saving approach from which the precursor to WeddingPath was born.

Bob, pondering

This is a photo of Bob, pondering on how to save money on the wedding budget

Bob looked into prices for invitations (of course hand-scribed in those days) and realised that a massive saving could be made if he skipped sending out invites. But how else could he let people know about the upcoming nuptials?

Being a turkey farmer, the resourceful Bob made the most of what was available to him. He and his wife selected the choicest birds and had a local scribe write the wedding details on the fluffed-up tail feathers. They then released the turkeys into the village. With a gentle tap on the backside, the birds obligingly ran from house to house informing the residents of the big event.

Wedding turkey

Can’t picture the scene? Check out the image above. The Hindi writing on the bird’s tail feathers literally translates as

“Welcome to our WeddingTurkey! This is the place where you can find all the information about our big day. Meenakshi-Kavindra and family are looking forward to the nuptials and will keep adding to this Wedding Turkey as the time approaches.”

Almost two hundred years later, this piece of family history inspired Sujay to create WeddingPath. I am sure Balakrishnan Sundaramurthy Menon would be very proud of his great-great-great grandson. To see a photo of this momentous occasion - effectively the ‘beginning of WeddingPath’ - CLICK HERE.
