Our forums are often buzzing with chat about wedding lists and whether it is okay to ask for money or other non-domestic gifts. This week we hear the views of a gift list company...
Online gift retailers, Prezzybox.com have done a bit of homework and find practical wedding gifts such as home accessories really aren’t as popular as they once were - partly due to the fact that over 70% of couples now live together before they get married.

The survey of over 1,000 people found that almost 50% would prefer money as a wedding gift and, in cases where wedding present are bought, keepsakes are favoured over toasters and other practical gifts. Furthermore, 68% of people questioned claim to have given money rather than a present at a wedding.
When asked “What would you prefer to be given as a gift for your wedding?” only 13% said they would prefer a gift for their home or garden. Almost half of the people surveyed said they would favour money or gift cards whilst 4% claimed presents weren’t important.
84% of people said that if they were given money as a gift at their own wedding they would use it to help pay off the costs of the day and honeymoon while 5% claimed they would save it. Also, rather interestingly, 3 in 5 wedding gifts bought are for the bride, not a joint present for the couple. The men seem to get left by the wayside on the big day!

Even if you've already set up home together, you'll need to give some thought to a gift list, whether you are thinking about asking guests to contribute to a charity, a honeymoon or your home.
If you can't decide where to place your gift list, one good solution is to register with a company that allows you to spread your list over a number of different places. The Bottom Drawer was one of the first of its kind to set up an alternative gift list. Garden makeovers were just one of their original ideas: why not get guests contribute to having a new garden designed and created for you? Since then, The Bottom Drawer has added online and department stores, charitable contributions and even honeymoons. If you register with sister company, Top Drawer Holidays, you get to use Bottom Drawer for free at the same time as getting a full service travel agency offering 100% financial protection. Some of the more unusual gifts registered at Bottom Drawer recently include collecting for a horse box and one for a grand piano where the couple made each key a separate virtual gift. With such a wide ranging choice, there is something for everyone and this is the best kind of gift list to have.
As well as choosing the right gift list for your needs, you need to consider your guests too. There need to be a range of gifts to suit
every budget - and also a choice that appeals to each and every guest. Guests generally want to give something that marks your marriage and that they will be remembered by. Some guests will want to give an individual present, such as a vase or a toaster, while others are happy contributing to your holiday of a lifetime or to a charity that you hold dear to your heart.
