GROOMS Speech Tips 3293 views

Got that butterflies feeling when you think about speech time? Professional speech-writer, David Block shares a few trade tips to help overcome wedding day nerves.
Feeling nervous when it comes to the wedding speeches is totally normal and is not altogether a bad thing. Some initial nerves are beneficial. They help the adrenalin flow and add energy to your delivery. Take four very deep breaths while you are waiting to be called. This helps to relax you and gets the blood flow moving, so relieving muscular and other tension.
Just before you are introduced, avoid dwelling on any negative thoughts, but repeat the first couple of sentences of your speech in your head over and again. This gives you the confidence that you will definitely get off to a good start. It's like pushing a car from standstill, once you get going, it gets easier.
When you rise to start, take your time, don't begin talking immediately. Stand up straight, establish your right to be there and spend two seconds scanning the whole gathering smiling at one or two of the people close to you. Remember, everyone wants your speech to succeed!
Try not to allow you voice to come from your throat. Think of it resonating from your chest and/or your head. Keep it low and relaxed. Take a sip of water if you feel your throat's tight or dry - or maybe for something to do while people are laughing at one of your funny lines.
If a table microphone's been set up, remember that the sound level should have been checked (remind the best man), so don't lean into it. It probably won't be a hand held mike, but if it is, hold it at chest height and move it with you as you turn to address all the audience.
Vary the pace of your speech to keep your guests captivated. Slow down when you need to project your feelings. Speed up slightly for anecdotes. Pause between p
aragraphs - not too long to appear pompous, but long enough to let your words sink in.
it's all right to read the script word for word, but rehearse as much as possible, not just to improve your delivery but also to familiarise yourself with the words are on the page. That will help you look up frequently as you speak because you'll know your way back on the page. And it's important to look up . . .and to scan every part of the room, so no one gets left out - no one likes to be 'ignored'. Don't be embarrassed to smile at your guests - they will invariably smile back!Photo©Freeman Photographics
