This week Emma starts hunting for her dress. She goes shopping with a smallish budget and comes home empty-handed....

When you haven’t got a huge budget for your wedding, it’s a good idea to think outside the box when it comes to your wedding dress. Some brides spend thousands on a dress, which is great if you have the money, but it’s not a level of spend most people can usually afford.
This is why I decided to try out Oxfam Bridal. You can find the service at a number of Oxfam shops nationwide. With many end-of-line designer dresses on offer at about 10 per cent of their usual retail price, it definitely sounded like a good idea.
I made an appointment at my local shop to drop in at the weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn’t for me. Many of the dresses were second-hand donations, some of
which were quite badly handmade. It also wasn’t really the environment I’d pictured when trying on dresses. I was hoping it would be a magical and exciting experience, but it really wasn’t.
So I’m going to have a look at some of the high street alternatives, like Debenhams and Bhs, who actually offer some great deals on wedding dresses that I wasn’t even aware of until I had started looking. I also found a shop in my local area that produces made-to-measure dresses at a fraction of designer prices. Most brides don’t realise that ready-to-wear dresses often need altering anyway, which can end up adding quite a bit more than you might have budgeted for. The other nice thing about having a dress made especially for you, is that you can be sure it’s unique!Come back next week to find out if Emma still thinks made-to-measure is the way to go...

This week Emma tries to find the balance between a ‘trendy’ and ‘traditional’ wedding in her quest to find the perfect place to get married.

For many of us bride-to-be's, the idea of ‘walking down the aisle’ goes back to when we were little girls. My dream groom was always Richard Dean Anderson who played MacGyver – I knew Face from the A-Team wasn’t the marrying kind. But then this was before we were old enough to consider the implications of a religious or civil ceremony.
A lot of people talk about feeling hypocritical at the thought of getting married in a church, and to some extent I totally agree. I’m not religious and I don’t attend church, apart from other people’s weddings and funerals, so will it really mean anything to me as a place for my wedding?
As alternatives, we have so far considered: a boat – it’s our reception venue, so would wrap up events very neatly, but you can’t get married on a movable structure; Henley Town Hall, a great, dramatic building in the centre of town, but apparently without a marriage licence; Hotel Du Vin, a stunning hotel with fabulous bedrooms, but we just couldn’t picture the ceremony there; and finally The Leander Club, a historic rowing club in Henley which we are viewing on Friday.
I had not got very far with the Archbishop’s office when enquiring about getting a special licence for Henley Church. Then last night I got a call from the vicar in Wargrave, the village where I grew
up. What a lovely man! He seemed absolutely delighted at the prospect of having our wedding at his church, not remotely bothered as to whether we were church-goers or not, and was keen to meet up and discuss our plans as soon as possible.
His enthusiasm made me stop and think. Perhaps getting married in the church would have meaning to me after all. A beautiful historic building in the middle of the village where I’ve known most people for the last thirty years; where I was christened; went to a million harvest festivals as a school kid and the odd drunken midnight mass as an irresponsible youth. We’ve had some sad times there too, like my father’s funeral, but I guess that is the path of life, from one end to the next, and all the bumps in between.
