Leigh is five planning weeks away from her big Scottish day, all organised from across the pond in California. A keen fan of Strictly Come Dancing, dance lessons are strictly on the agenda.
«After months of watching Strictly Come Dancing, it only seemed natural that our first dance would be the perfect opportunity to live out my dream. We would be floating effortlessly around the dance floor followed by rapturous applause by our astounded guests. My beloved had a different vision. He was not keen on the idea of prancing about like a prize idiot followed by the uproarious laughter of his friends.
But all that was to change after attending a friend’s wedding a few months ago. As we watched the embarrassed couple cling to each other awkwardly for what seemed like an eternity, my hubby-to-be leaned over and said that actually we should take dancing lessons. He would later claim that his enthusiasm was due to overindulgence at the free bar. But the
words had been said and there was no going back - I booked five private lessons.
Thanks to ‘Strictly’ (or ‘Dancing with the Stars’ as it’s known Stateside) dance classes are booming. However, our own previous experience of a Tango class run by a woman in a rather disturbing leotard, had left us
apprehensive. How relieved we were to find our leotard-less dance instructor was fantastic. After listening to our chosen song and declaring it to be a waltz, she had us stepping our way around the dance floor with ease (well, almost!) in no time. What surprised us most was how much we enjoyed the classes, they were fun, great exercise and actually very romantic. I was genuinely sad at the end of our last class this week.»
Leigh's Tip
While taking private classes isn’t exactly cheap, it’s worth the expense and is guaranteed to score straight tens with your guests! If you’re interested in taking ballroom dancing classes, why not check out the BBC ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ page for a list of schools in your area at bbc.co.uk.

Leigh is six planning weeks away from planning her big day in Scotland, all organised from across the pond in California. This week Leigh discovers sending invitations is not as easy as receiving them.
Something about receiving a weddding invitation makes your heart jump and the back of your neck go all tingly. After sifting through bills and advertisements, there’s something very special about discovering an ivory envelope bearing your name and opening it to discover a ribbon emblazoned invitation requesting the honour of your presence at so and so’s wedding.

In the 'good old days' weddings were announced by the town crier - how simple! Now the options are endless. You could choose to make your own or pick a ready-made design. Then there are the many embellishments; ribbon, diamantes, vellum overlays…the list goes on.
In the end, I chose a simple ivory printed card with a leaf design in chocolate - and foolishly thought the hard part was over. Firstly came the heated discussions of whether Dad’s ‘good’ friend whom we hadn’t seen for over a year should be invited to the whole thing or just the reception. Crisis resolved (he was invited to the reception) I was able to begin the long job of addressing the envelopes. Calligraphy, even with a fancy pen, is not as easy as it looks.
But the most stressful point came when after sealing all the US envelopes (complete with a stamped RSVP card) we discovered that stamp prices were
due to go up by one cent the next day. Cue frantic opening of the invitations to add said one cent stamp.
So, after all that, it was with mixed feelings that I posted our invitations this week. I was almost sad to let them go, while realizing with a jolt of excitement that once they were found, mixed in with the bills, the countdown would really begin!Photo © slipperyfishes.com
Next week: Leigh checks out the local dance school.

Later this month sees Cheryl slip the ring on her finger and join ranks with the newlyweds. So our bride in California, the lovely Leigh, has come on board for a six week countdown to her big Scottish day.
I’d like to introduce myself, my name is Leigh and I’m a bride to be! It may sound like an intro from ‘Weddingaholics Anonymous’ but I’d be the first to admit that organizing my wedding really has become a bit of an addiction! They say that the best way to deal with an addiction is to talk about it so, for the next couple of months I’ll be writing a blog detailing the ups and downs of my foray into wedding planning. But to start, perhaps I should tell you a little of the story so far.
My beloved and I met 4 years ago at an American Summer camp. Fast forward through hundreds of phone calls, many tearful goodbyes at airports, a year spent traveling in Europe, a proposal in Venice and several months of nightmarish bureaucracy applying for a visa …and I’m finally in California, planning my wedding in Scotland. I used the agonizing time spent waiting for a visa productively and chose the dress, photographer, cake and band almost immediately and I’m now completing the final stages of planning from across the ocean.
I’ve very quickly come to realize that the key to successful planning is organization, particularly where a transatlantic wedding is involved. I’ve finally begun to see the worth in all those boring summer office jobs spent filing. Lists and spreadsheets have become my new best friends of late as I begin to catalogue guests, presents, suppliers, budgets and just about anything else I can squeeze into my close to bursting ‘Wedding’ folder.
So, from 18th June I’ll let you peek into my wedding obsessed little mind every Wednesday and hope that it isn’t just me, and that you too are an addict of all things wedding related! Meantime, you can check out our WeddingPath at leighandchris.weddingpath.co.uk. -
