    Wedding Path Newswire

Leigh is two planning weeks away from her big Scottish day, all organised from across the pond in California. This week she discovers bridesmaid-zilla.

This week I took my four-year-old flower girl to have her dress fitted. As she is a self-titled princess who frequently floats around dressed as Ariel, Belle or Cinderella, I had no doubts that she would be thrilled to parade around in the suitably Disney princess-esque dress I had found for her. Clearly I had forgotten what it's like to be four! The fitting turned out to be a nightmare; first she didn’t want to try on the dress, then when the dressmaker mentioning pinning it she screamed and suddenly the dress was hurting her. I began to have visions of us frantically trying to cajole her into the dress five minutes before the ceremony and irrationally began to wonder if the whole day would be ruined.

The tradition of flower girls actually started with the Greeks and Romans who had children throwing herbs symbolic of fertility in front of the bride as she walked. Modern flower girls are perhaps more of an aesthetic choice these days, depending on the willingness of the participant, she can be dressed in angel or fairies wings and, even wield a wand or bubbles.

I myself was once a flower girl at my aunt’s wedding and, as I conveniently forgot in the dressmakers, I created some drama of my own. After catching a pageboy relieving himself in the hotel pond, in a fit of rage I threw my pomander at him and stormed into the dining room to loudly inform the first person I saw - who happened to be my grandfather right in the middle of his father of the bride speech. While I now cringe in horror at my actions, it’s important for me to remember one thing - despite my best efforts, I did not ruin the day!

  • WEDDING GOSSIP Stepping Up 10263 views

Step Up 2: The Streets is essentially a dance movie and if you love dancing, street dancing in particular then this movie is perfect for you! Set in Baltimore, in the USA, Andie (Briana Evigan) is a troubled teenager whose passion is dance. Since her mother passed away she has been dancing with the ‘410’, a prestigious crew who mean the world to her. But, when her mother’s best friend decides that she can no longer take care of Andie with her skipping school and late nights, her world is shattered with the prospect of moving away. Her one last chance is to get into the MSA, a posh dancing school where her talent can be truly recognised. Her efforts are successful due to the admiration of the director’s brother, dishy Chase Collins (Robert Hoffman).

Andie's relationship soon deteriorates with the 410 until she is chucked out for not attending rehearsals, seeing she is in need, Chase offers to start their own crew. At first it seems like an unlikely prospect but soon Andie realises that they are in for the chance at performing at the most-anticipated dance event, ‘The Streets’. Romance blossoms between the pair and events continue to go against them with the 410 doing everything they can to stop them. But, will they eventually succeed beyond their wildest dreams?

The film overall is pretty good, whether you are a dance fan or not as there are other interests in there. Don’t be put off by the slow start, it gradually builds up and soon gets much more interesting. It certainly has some impressive dance moves and the acting cannot be faulted, with a great ending which will make you smile and possibly cry. It’s well worth watching for the pure enjoyment and cheesy lines as well as the true drama and tension that it manages to create. A sweet film, ideal for a lazy night in.

    WP Rating: 6/10
Out on DVD from 14th July at all major retailers.
